Netflix offers several different levels of service.
Their most popular plan, their "Standard" plan is only $17.99.
(Netflix dropped their price by a whopping $4.00 a month in November, 2004, setting off a DVD rental price war, with the major players, Blockbuster and Wal-Mart meeting or beating the new lower price. Wal-Mart, however, closed their online DVD rental business and handed over all their customers to Netflix in a promotional arrangement begun in May, 2005.)
For the $17.99 monthly fee, you're allowed to have 3 DVDs out for as long as you like. This is the plan that you're automatically signed up for if you don't cancel after your free trial. If you're a big couch potato or have a big family, you may prefer one of their premium plans. The Netflix "Plus," and "Ultimate" plans allow you to have 5 or 8 DVDs in circulation at any given time... at prices ranging from a flat monthly fee of $29.99 to $47.99.
But many people don't realize that they now offer an "Economy" plan which - for just $11.99 a month - allows you to have two DVDs out at a time. This is the plan that's been advertised heavily across the internet recently, most likely in response to Blockbuster's lower price point. But his low price plan from Netflix isn't new, what's new is that they've started advertising it!
The restriction with this "lite" plan, however, is that you can only rent a maximum of four DVD's a month. If you've watched and returned four DVDs, but there are still a few days or weeks left to the month, they will not ship you the next DVD in your rental queue. You'll have to wait for the next billing cycle to begin. That's why this plan is striclty recommended for light viewers only.
Similarly, Netflix now offers a "budget" service for only $9.99 a month. With this plan, you're limited to having just one DVD in circulation at any given time.
Only you can decide which plan is best for you and your viewing habits. Fortunately, Netflix allows you to upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time after your free trial. It's easy. Just visit the "Your Account" page on the website and select your preferred plan. (For instnance, if you already know that you'd like to start with the $11.99 plan, here's what you should do. Sign-up for the $17.99 3-at-a-time service... that's the plan you'll find offered when you click through to join... and just before the two week free trial period ends, downgrade your membership to the 2-at-a-time plan).
You can cancel the service at any time. Visit the "Customer Service" section at netflix.com and click on "Cancel my account."
With so many price plans to choose from, it's no wonder Netflix is the world's largest and most popular online DVD rental service, with over three million active members!
